Ebonyi court arraigns, remands man for allegedly killing mother

By Jeff Agbodo, Abakaliki

ABAKALIKI — A Magistrate Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has arraigned and remanded a 30-year-old man, Oforbuike Damian, for allegedly killing his mother, Onyema.

The incident reportedly occurred on March 19, 2026, at Ukawu in Onicha Local Government Area of the state, where the suspect allegedly stabbed his mother to death following a dispute.

According to reports, the altercation was linked to the mother’s alleged refusal to perform a spiritual bath for him and to open a barbing salon for his brother.

After the incident, the suspect fled the community but was later apprehended by villagers and handed over to the police.

The Police Directorate of Legal Services, led by Chinagorom Eze, subsequently arraigned the suspect before the court.

When the case was called, the suspect, who had no legal representation, admitted to the offence.

According to the charge sheet, the defendant allegedly caused the death of his mother by stabbing her with a knife, an offence punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law of Ebonyi State.

The presiding Magistrate, Agnma Chinedu Agnma, ordered that the suspect be remanded in a correctional centre and directed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to take over the case, noting that the Magistrate Court lacks jurisdiction to try the matter. The case was adjourned to April 9, 2026, for further proceedings.
