ABUJA – The National Convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress APCon Friday night elected Dr. Ben Nwoye as its new Deputy National Chairman (South), effectively replacing Chief Emma Eneukwu.
The transition took place during the party’s National Convention at Eagles Square.
Until the late-night decision, Chief Eneukwu had served as the Deputy National Chairman for the region. However, the emergence of Nwoye – a move solidified by a consensus arrangement – indicates the party’s intent to recalibrate its mobilization strategy ahead of future electoral cycles.
Dr Nwoye, a legal professional and the immediate past Caretaker Committee Chairman of the APC in Enugu State, entered the race with a clear mandate for modernization.
He had earlier been screened alongside Mr Eneukwu to contest for the office.
In his pitch to the delegates, Nwoye emphasized that his tenure would focus on strengthening internal party democracy and ensuring that the party’s foundation remains rooted in its members rather than its elite.
He specifically advocated for the creation of a “Women and Youth Empowerment Desk,” an initiative designed to provide direct support and a stronger voice to grassroots members who have traditionally felt sidelined.
“The APC must continue to be broad enough to accommodate diversity and disciplined enough to protect its values,” Nwoye noted during the lead-up to the election.
