Fresh fears have gripped residents of Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State following an improvised explosive device (IED) blast that claimed a life and left others injured on Monday morning.
The Kwara State Government confirmed the incident, describing it as a disturbing development in a region already battling security challenges.
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, said the explosive device detonated along a road outside the community as a vehicle passed over it.
“The IED went off as a vehicle drove over it on Monday morning,” Ajakaye said, noting that the explosion occurred some distance from Woro.
He disclosed that a male occupant of the vehicle died on the spot, while a woman and her child, who were also in the vehicle, were caught in the blast. The woman sustained injuries and has been taken to a medical facility where she is responding to treatment, while the child escaped unharmed.
The incident has heightened tension across the area, with residents expressing renewed fears over their safety amid lingering insecurity.
Confirming the development, the Special Assistant on Media to the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, ZulQharnain Shero Musa, said the explosion resulted in casualties, although the full extent is yet to be determined.
“There was an explosion around Woro this morning which claimed lives, but the exact number of casualties is still unclear,” Musa said.
He added that preliminary findings point to the possibility that the explosive device was planted by suspected insurgents.
