Jonathan ‘must be sad’ about PDP evaporating — Sen Dickson

Former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator Seriake Dickson has expressed deep sorrow over the collapse of the Peoples Democratic Party, saying former President Goodluck Jonathan “must be very sad” to watch the platform that produced him as president disintegrate before his eyes.

Dickson made the remarks on Tuesday as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, weeks after he defected from the PDP to the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress on March 5.

Asked whether he consulted Jonathan before making the move, Dickson, who hails from the same Bayelsa State as the former president, said, “What I can say is that President Jonathan, while I’m not his spokesman, must be very sad.

“I know that if I’m sad, having been this attached to the PDP, you can imagine how sad he will be, having been governor, deputy governor, vice president, and president of Nigeria on that platform, and right before your eyes, that platform is evaporating,” he said.

Dickson, who governed Bayelsa State under the PDP,  described the NDC as a credible alternative for Nigerians seeking a viable opposition platform.

“So, my dear Nigerians, you now have a credible alternative opposition party known as the Nigeria Democratic Congress. Yes, it is coming at this time. We would have wished it had started some years or months ago; we don’t control INEC or its processes. They delayed. We also don’t control the judiciary, but thank God it has finally arrived,” he said.

Pushing back against the narrative that he and other senior figures had abandoned the PDP, Dickson reframed his departure as an involuntary exit driven by the party’s self-destruction.

“It wouldn’t be correct to say that we are leaving the PDP or that I have left the PDP. The PDP, rather unfortunately, has left us, has left me, because the platform has evaporated and ceased to exist,” he stated.

The PDP has been engulfed in a leadership crisis over the past year, with two factions claiming the party’s structure.

The crisis has triggered a wave of defections, leaving the party with only two governors after several others crossed to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
