Davido says he is shifting focus back to his roots, revealing that his upcoming song will strongly reflect African sounds rather than cater to Western expectations.
The Afrobeats star recently announced his first-ever UK festival, which would be headlined ‘Davido and Friends’ at the iconic Crystal Palace Bowl.
The award-winning artiste made the remarks during an appearance on the Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show with Eddie Kadi, where he reflected on his career achievements and future plans.
“This part of my career, I have performed everywhere, sold out every arena, I have been to three Grammys in the last three years. The music that is coming next is very Davido, it is very African. We have done it so I am not really looking to really do Western sounds,” he said.
Davido noted that after years of global success and recognition, including multiple Grammy nominations, he now feels fulfilled and less driven by the need for Western validation.
Instead, the singer emphasised a desire to embrace a more authentic sound rooted in his identity, signalling a new phase in his musical journey.
He also highlighted his strong fan base in South Africa, stating that a significant portion of the population connects with his music.
According to him, “80 per cent” of South Africans are familiar with and supportive of his work, a reception he attributes to his collaborations with several artistes from the country and his consistent presence in its music scene.
“I remember when I had the Number 1 song on radio in South Africa, and for you as an Afrobeat artiste to get a No. 1 song in SA. Cause if you look at the top songs there, it’s American & South African music,” he said.
