Ozoro Festival Assault: NAPTIP condemns attack on women

By Favour Ulebor, Abuja

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has condemned the assault on women and girls during a festival in Ozoro, describing the incident as “wrong and unacceptable.”

In a statement released on Sunday, NAPTIP expressed concern about the safety of women in public spaces and the rise of gender-based violence in communities. The agency warned that cultural events must not be used to justify harming others.

The condemnation follows widespread outrage over viral videos showing women being attacked and harassed during the Alue Do Festival in Ozoro. Reports indicate that some youths allegedly misinterpreted cultural practices to assault females present during the event.

NAPTIP also commended the swift response of law enforcement, noting the arrests of suspects, including the festival organizer and the community head.

The statement read in part: “These criminal acts violate human rights and dignity and constitute gender-based violence. We commend the Nigeria Police Force in Delta State for their immediate intervention.

NAPTIP will continue to support actions that ensure justice for victims and prevent such crimes in the future.”

The Delta State Police Command had earlier confirmed arrests related to the incident and ordered a full investigation following the circulation of disturbing videos online.
