Abuja – The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has called for an urgent investigation into the alleged harassment and assault of women during a recent festival in Ozoro, Delta State.
In a statement signed by its National Spokesman, Chief Dr. Obiuwevbi Ominimini, the apex socio-political body of the Niger Delta urged the Nigeria Police to act swiftly to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
PANDEF stressed that no traditional practice should infringe on the constitutional rights of citizens, warning that cultural events must not be used as a cover for acts that violate human dignity.
“On no account should any traditional practice jeopardise the constitutional rights of citizens in any society, kingdom, or community,” the statement said.
The group noted that Ozoro, the headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area, has long been a peaceful community accommodating both indigenes and non-indigenes, including students of the Delta State University of Science and Technology. It emphasized that all residents, regardless of origin or belief, are entitled to their rights as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.
While condemning the incident, PANDEF commended the swift response of the monarch of Ozoro Kingdom and the President-General of the community for speaking out against the alleged acts.
It, however, insisted that those involved must be prosecuted without delay to serve as a deterrent to others. “The world has moved past such barbaric practices. All traditional activities must conform to the laws of the land,” the statement added.
The group also called on the leadership of the community to put measures in place to prevent a recurrence, noting that Ozoro prides itself on having an educated and enlightened leadership.
PANDEF reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of human rights and urged authorities to ensure justice for the victims while preserving the peace and reputation of the community.
