Ahead of the governorship election in 2027, the Lagos Youths for Gbaja Initiative has thrown its weight behind the Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, to emerge as next governor of Lagos State.
The group, in a statement by its coordinator, Mr Sote Esinloku, said Lagos State requires not just a capable administrator but a leader who understands governance.
It stated that Gbajabiamila brings a depth of legislative experience that is difficult to match, having served multiple terms in the National Assembly.
The statement reads: “As Lagos State looks ahead to the 2027 gubernatorial transition, conversations about continuity, competence, and visionary leadership have taken center stage. The state, often described as Nigeria’s economic heartbeat, requires not just a capable administrator but a leader who understands governance at both the grassroots and national levels. In this context, Femi Gbajabiamila stands out as a compelling successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“First, Gbajabiamila brings a depth of legislative experience that is difficult to match. Having served multiple terms in the National Assembly, including his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives, he has demonstrated a firm grasp of policymaking, negotiation, and institutional leadership. Lagos, with its complex governance challenges, would benefit from a leader who understands how to navigate political structures and secure federal collaboration—an area where Gbajabiamila has proven strength.
“Second, continuity matters. Sanwo-Olu’s administration has focused on infrastructure, transportation, and urban development under the THEMES agenda. Gbajabiamila, being a long-time political ally within the same ideological camp, is well-positioned to sustain and build upon these initiatives. A smooth transition that avoids policy disruption is critical for a megacity like Lagos, where long-term projects require consistency across administrations.
“Moreover, Gbajabiamila’s exposure on the national stage provides him with a broader perspective on economic and security issues. Lagos does not operate in isolation; its prosperity is tied to national policies and global economic trends. A governor with strong federal connections and international outlook could better position the state for investment, innovation, and strategic partnerships.
“Another key advantage is his reputation for political maturity and consensus-building. Lagos politics, while relatively stable, still demands careful coalition management across diverse interests. Gbajabiamila has built a career on bridging divides, managing stakeholders, and maintaining party cohesion—skills that are essential for governing a diverse and dynamic population.
“Critics may argue that executive experience differs from legislative leadership. However, leadership itself is transferable when grounded in vision, discipline, and the ability to assemble strong teams. Gbajabiamila has consistently demonstrated these qualities, and with the right technocratic support, he could transition effectively into an executive role.
“Finally, Lagos needs a leader who can balance continuity with innovation. While preserving the gains of the current administration, the state must also address emerging challenges such as population growth, climate resilience, and digital transformation. Gbajabiamila’s blend of experience, networks, and forward-thinking approach makes him a strong candidate to lead Lagos into its next phase of development.
“In conclusion, the decision on who succeeds Sanwo-Olu in 2027 will shape Lagos for years to come. While several capable individuals may emerge, Gbajabiamila’s track record, political experience, and alignment with ongoing development priorities make him a persuasive choice for those who value stability, progress, and strategic leadership.”
